How We Evaluate Products, Tools, and Investments

Our Evaluation Methodology

Canopy Press publishes data-driven analysis across finance, career, tech, health, and productivity. Every recommendation, comparison, and ranking follows the same process.

We Analyze Data, Not Products on a Shelf

Canopy Press is a publication, not a testing lab. We do not claim hands-on experience with every product we cover. Instead, we analyze:

  • Published specifications from manufacturers and official product pages
  • Independent research including peer-reviewed studies, clinical trials, and government data
  • Verified user data from aggregated reviews by verified purchasers
  • Regulatory filings including SEC filings, IRS guidance, FDA approvals, and FTC actions

When we compare products, we cite the source: "according to manufacturer specs," "per published clinical validation," or "based on verified user reviews." We never present sourced facts as our own discoveries.

Our Data Sources

Every claim in a Canopy Press article must be defensible. Our primary data sources:

  • Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) — interest rates, inflation, employment, GDP
  • Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) — wages, employment, CPI, occupational data
  • Internal Revenue Service (IRS) — tax brackets, contribution limits, filing rules
  • U.S. Census Bureau — income, housing, demographics, migration
  • Social Security Administration (SSA) — benefit calculations, retirement data
  • Centers for Disease Control (CDC) — health statistics, nutrition data
  • SEC / EDGAR — company filings, fund expense ratios, prospectuses

Editorial Standards

Our full editorial standards are published at canopy.press/editorial-standards. The highlights:

  • Quality gate: Every article must score 7.0+ on our internal quality scale before publishing. Articles below threshold are held for revision.
  • Fact-checking: Every article passes through an adversarial fact-checker that challenges claims, verifies numbers against primary sources, and flags unsupported assertions.
  • Source citations: Key claims include parenthetical citations (IRS, BLS, FRED, etc.). Every article includes a Sources section linking to original data.
  • No first-person claims: Canopy Press is a publication, not a person. We never claim personal testing experience or use first-person anecdotes.
  • Error corrections: Found an error? Email [email protected]. We verify and correct within 24 hours.

How We Handle Affiliate Links

Some articles contain affiliate links. If you purchase through these links, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases.

Our editorial process is the same whether or not a product has an affiliate program. We evaluate based on data and user outcomes, not commission rates. Products are selected by editorial relevance, not by which ones pay us.

Every affiliate link is marked with rel="nofollow sponsored" per FTC guidelines and opens in a new tab.

Update Schedule

Financial data changes constantly. Our update policy:

  • IRS limits and tax brackets: Updated annually when the IRS publishes new numbers (typically October/November for the following year)
  • Product comparisons: Reviewed quarterly for pricing and feature changes
  • Market data articles: Flagged for refresh when underlying data is more than 90 days old
  • Evergreen guides: Reviewed annually for accuracy

Articles display a "Data as of" date when they reference time-sensitive numbers.
